“In my 30-plus years in design, the product I am most proud of is the Xbox Adaptive Controller” -Carl Ledbetter, Head of Design, Xbox Devices. In the latest issue of Microsoft Signal, Ledbetter shares an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the process of designing a controller to meet the needs of primarily players with limited mobility. “It’s not a mass market product, but I don’t think I’ve worked on anything with a bigger impact, Ledbetter says. “We created something that unlocked the ability for people to play games that they could not otherwise, and as a designer, that’s a proud moment. “Since 2014, Microsoft’s core mission statement has been ‘to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more.’ I can’t think of a product I’ve worked on that better embodies this than the Xbox Adaptive Controller.” Click here for more behind the scenes looks at Ledbetter’s designs for the Xbox, the IntelliMouse, and more: https://xbx.lv/3LU5n4B

    • A neatly arranged flat lay of product design materials on a white surface. The items include gray and white plastic controller prototypes with large circular pads, two round black components, an empty white controller shell with cutouts, and a black internal frame piece. There are also hand-drawn technical sketches showing controller concepts and mechanisms, a digital caliper, a kraft notebook, and a black-and-green marker. The layout appears to represent an early hardware design or prototyping process for an accessible game controller.

Nearly 68 percent of players say gaming is more emotionally fulfilling than other hobbies. That's because games don't just entertain us—they ask something of us. When we build, explore, or compete, we create our own joy. The reward isn't passive. It's personal. This is just one of many findings from Xbox’s Culture of Play Report. To get a truer picture of how players feel about gaming, we partnered with Edelman Data & Intelligence to survey 1,500 adult video game players in the U.S. and uncovered a new look at why play feels different, and why so many people say it’s time well-spent. The data highlighted three key reasons why players keep coming back: Meaning, Connection, and Self-Expression.
