The Indian Metro Rail network is a means of mass rapid transit (MRT) for lakhs of commuters who travel to earn their bread and butter on a daily basis. It is spread across a massive 939.18 kilometers (approx.) in 17 major Indian cities, Thane being a fertile ground for the upcoming mega project.
Talking about Thane Metro, officially known as the Thane Integral Metro Rail Project, it is estimated that the total cost to establish this massive real estate project would be Rs. 12,200 crores. Both the Indian government as well as the Government of Maharashtra along with bilateral agencies will be funding the project. Apart from this, funds will also be raised using modern fund raising methods. These will include – Station Naming and Access Rights for Corporate, Monetization of Assets, Value Capture Financing route.
As per Maha Metro, the ridership for this project will be 6.47 lakh by 2029, 7.61 lakh by 2035, and 8.72 lakh by 2045. The 29 kilometers corridor will run parallel to the western periphery of the city. The entire project will be circumscribed by the Ulhas River on one side and by Sanjay Gandhi National Park on the other side.
Initial Phase of Thane Metro
In its early stage, the Thane Metro was planned as a regular metro line. The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation for the Thane Metro project in December 2018. However a year later, in 2019, the project was almost canned owing to hefty cost concerns.
Then, in 2020, the ambitious metro project was revived for the second time as a metrolite also known as light rail transit (LRT) system. By 2023, the Thane Metro project was completely reimagined and redesigned as a regular metro line.

Thane Metro - In a Nutshell
The primary objective of the upcoming Thane Metro project is to help the locals commute in a safer and better manner. It will also curb their reliability on personal vehicles, thus, impacting the air pollution levels. As the metro runs on electricity, the metro trains are not just carbon efficient, offering a sustainable means of transportation to the locals, but will also be beneficial for the environment in the larger scheme of things.
