Editing and effects
While the source material is one ingredient for sound design, the real magic happens in layering and processing, where we get to recontextualize our source material and create entirely new sounds through different combinations of sounds and processing techniques. We will explore some of the fundamentals of designing effective and impactful sound effects and create the foundation for you to go ahead and explore further.
Layering
The most essential sound design technique and one that has been practiced since the dawn of the craft is layering – combining different sounds to create entirely new ones. Whether it’s layering lion roars with engines revving to create more menacing car sounds, to layering the recordings of popping bubble wrap with clothes rustling to recreate the sound of a campfire. Our imagination is the limit when it comes to finding combinations of seemingly disparate sounds that can reveal entirely new sonic worlds.
