In looking for my books for my text set, I used the Teaching Resource Center at the Joyner Library. They have an excellent Easy Read Picture book section, as well as a wonderful selection of nonfiction civil war for children.

Just in time is a picture book about two young kids, Derek and Michael, who take a trip with their grandmother too Harpers Ferry to look at the museum. The owner then makes the museum similar to a life like video game, and the boys are trying to win, while learning all about the civil war, through- out the entire story. Grade 5
Cecils Story

Cecils Story is a book in which a narrator tells a young audience about what would happen if their papa went off to war. It describes the day to day chores that normally are done by adults that a young child would have to take over. Grade 4/5
Dadblamed Union Army Cow

Dadblamed Union Army Cow is a comical picture book about a cow that follows a soldier to war, and sticks with that soldier through out the war; through the good and the bad. Through out the whole book the soldier is frustrated that the cow is there, but towards the end he realizes that the cow actually helped him and the other soldiers out a great deal. Grade 4/5

Lincoln Memorial in a non-fiction text, describing the memorial, as well Abraham Lincoln. This book is very easy to navigate and very easy to understand; it also has fun facts at the bottom of every page! Grade 4/5
