Councilmember McDuffie Addresses Crime Wave with Congresswoman Norton WASHINGTON, DC This afternoon, Ward 5 Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie visited Fort Totten with Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and members of the National Park Service, the Park Police, and the Metropolitan Police Department in response to recent robberies and assaults along the Fort Totten trails between Gallatin Street, NE, and Gallaway Street, NE. The Councilmember convened the group to address serious safety concerns about trail lighting and maintenance. Residents are using the Fort Totten trails to access the Metro, and we must do everything within our power to ensure their safety along this route, stated McDuffie. It is unacceptable that a wave of violent crime impede residents ability to walk freely and without fear on their daily commute, added McDuffie. While incidents of crime are down over last month, Congresswoman Norton stressed the importance of safety enhancements to the trails in the immediate future. Representatives of the Park Service are requiring that an environmental assessment of trail enhancements be conducted to study their impact on surrounding wetlands. Councilmember McDuffie requested that the environmental assessment be completed within a reasonable timeframe. Councilmember McDuffie and Congresswoman Norton requested that the Park Service develop an immediate strategy to enhance lighting along the trails. -###-
