Mechanical advantage (1) The relationship between the effort needed to lift something (input) and the load itself (output) is called the mechanical advantage. When a machine can put out more force than is put in, the machine is said to give a good mechanical advantage. The ratio can be calculated by dividing the load by the effort.

Mechanical advantage (2) In a lever, an effort of 10 N is used to move a load of 50 N. What is the mechanical advantage of the lever?
This effectively means that, for this lever, any effort will move a load that is five times larger.

Velocity ratio (1) Sometimes machines translate a small amount of movement into a larger amount (or vice versa). This property is known as the velocity ratio, and is found by dividing the distance moved by the effort by the distance moved by the load in the same period of time.
