Network I Lesson 21

This document provides an overview of key concepts for designing a local area network (LAN). It defines common hardware components such as file servers, which centrally store applications and files for access by other workstations on the network. Factors to consider for selecting file servers and workstations include processing power, storage capacity, and whether they can operate independently if the server fails. Network interface cards (NICs) and hubs are also described as essential for connecting devices to the shared networking media and facilitating communication. Proper selection of these hardware components and cabling type is important for ensuring network reliability and performance.

Network I Lesson 21

Student Objectives: After completing this lesson, students will be able to: identify the hardware components of a LAN describe what a file server is and does determine factors to be considered in selecting a file server determine factors to be considered in selecting workstations recognize importance of network media on a LAN explain the role and importance of NIC cards describe what a hub is and it role on LAN s design a LAN using the appropriate hardware and networking media

Terms: file server - node or software program that provides services to clients - operate at high rates of speed - most powerful PC on the network - central repository for application programs RAM - Random access memory - volatile memory Bus- (highway) common physical signal path of wires or other media across which signals can be sent from one part of computer to another LAN adapters - network interface card that provides network communication capabilities to and from a computer system hubs - serves as the center for a star topology - not intelligent - amplifies signals and propagates signals - does not filter- no path determination or switching - used as network concentration point - provides multiple connections concentrators - same as hubs Lesson Summary: A NETWORK IS ONLY AS RELIABLE AS ITS CABLING LAN require workstations, networking media, NIC cards and a hub or wiring center, and a s file server file servers can be accessed by all workstations on a network - it location will impact s network design configuration and types of media to be used for performance usually each workstation has its own storage capacity factors in determining type of workstations: will they run if the server goes down will the operating system support a particular type of workstation workstation life = 5 years software life = 2 years networking media = 15 years NIC card functions: connection point form data packets and send them out onto the networking media transform the packets into information that can be understood implement orderly access to shared networking media the type of cable used may determine the type of NIC card
