In 2005, the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) was signed in Kenya between the National Congress Party and the Sudan Peoples Liberation Movement. The intention of the agreement was to bring peace to Sudan after more than half a century of civil war, but has it succeeded? In this fascinating study, Dr Joseph O. Abulemoi, author of two previous works on Africa and Sudan, investigates the causes of the NorthSouth Sudan conflict from a variety of viewpoints, including historical, political and social perspectives. He discusses the CPA and its relationship with todays post-conflict Sudan, the weaknesses of the Agreement and the challenges facing its implementation. He also explains why he feels the CPA may result in the disintegration of Sudan and proposes an alternative solution. This compelling discussion of the CPA and its place in Sudanese politics will interest students of Sudanese history, as well as anyone who wishes to learn more about the recent history of the region. About the Author Born in 1964, Dr Abulemoi studied and lived in Sudan until 1996, when he was forced to leave by the Islamist government. He went into exile in Jordan and eventually resettled in the UK in 1999, where he obtained a diploma in justice and peace studies at the London Missionary Institute in 2002, an MA in international relations at London Metropolitan University in 2005 and a PhD in the Sudanese CPA in 2009. Dr Abulemoi has lectured on tribalism and politics in Africa and has taught Sudanese history in Khartoum, Sudan.
