Igcse Physics Practical Activity (Potential Divider)

This document provides instructions for an IGCSE physics practical activity to determine the resistance of a filament lamp using a potential divider circuit. Students will connect a power supply, filament bulb, variable resistor, ammeter, and voltmeter in a circuit. They will record voltage and current measurements as the potentiometer resistance is varied and plot a V/I graph, which can be used to determine the resistance of the filament lamp.

IGCSE PHYSICS PRACTICAL ACTIVITY Topic: Potential Divider Objective: Determine the resistance of a filament lamp by using potential

divider circuit. Apparatus: 1) Power supply. 2) A filament bulb. 3) A 50 ohms variable resistor. 4) A digital ammeter. 5) A digital voltmeter. 6) A one way switch. 7) Connecting wires. Activities: 1. Set up the apparatus as the following diagram.

2. Change the resistance of potentiometer so the voltage across the lamp will change. 3. Record the voltage and the current measured into the table.
Voltage (volts) Current (amps)

4. Repeat this step to collect 10 data. 5. Plot the V/I graph on the plotting sheet. 6. Explain how would you determine the resistance of the filament lamp by using the graph?
