Atmiya Institute of Technology and Science For Diploma Studies Mid Semseter - 2013

(1) The document is a mid-semester exam from the Atmiya Institute of Technology and Science for diploma students. (2) It contains 3 questions - the first asks to define several kinematic terms, the second asks about inversion of mechanisms and to sketch and explain a crank and slotted lever quick return mechanism, and the third asks to determine velocity and acceleration of a piston using relative velocity method or to find angular velocities and accelerations in a four bar linkage. (3) Additional details are provided for each question, including specific lengths, rotations speeds, angles, and motions required for mechanisms.

In an I.C. Engine the length of the crank and connecting rod are 150mm and 600mm respectively. The cranks rotates uniformly at 240 r.p.m. in clockwise direction using relative velocity method so determine following By any one method 1) Velocity of piston 2) Acceleration of piston. The crank has turned to 30 from I.D.C. OR In four bar chain ABCD,link AD is fixed and the crank AB rotates at 10 radians/sec clockwise. Length of link AB=60mm,BC=CD=70mm, DA=120mm ,when angle DAB=60 and both B & C link on the same side of AD find (i) angular velocities of BC and CD (ii) angular acceleration of BC and CD Draw cam profile to move the knife edge follower to give 40 mm lift with S.H.M. motion. During 120 of cam rotation and it dwells for 40 of cam rotation then it returns with uniform velocity during 120 rotation . The follower remains in rest in remaining period. The axis of the follower passes through axis of cam shaft. Base circle diameter of the cam is 60 mm OR A cam with 30 mm as minimum diameter is rotating clockwise direction and gives following motion to a roller follower of 10 mm diameter (i) Follower to complete outward stroke of 25 mm during 120 of cam rotation with equal uniform acceleration and retardation (ii)follower to dwell for 60 of cam motion (iii) follower to return to its initial position during 90 of cam rotation with simple harmonic motion (SHM) (iv) follower to dwell for remaining 90 of cam rotation
