How an Electric Bell Works

An electric bell uses an electromagnet to generate a magnetic field that pulls an iron armature towards it, causing a hammer to hit the bell, before the armature breaks the circuit and returns to its original position to repeat the process, creating a ringing sound. The electromagnet contains a soft iron core that strengthens its magnetic field by aligning the magnetic dipoles in the iron with the field created by the solenoid.

Structure of an electric bell Electromagnets can be found in many devices. One of them is the electric bell.

How it works: 1. When the switch is closed the circuit is completed and a current flows switching on the electromagnet. 2. The iron armature is pulled towards the electromagnet and the hammer hits the bell. 3. This movement of the iron armature breaks the circuit and no current flows switching off the development. 4. The iron armature is no longer attracted and it goes back completing the circuit and everything starts again. Why is there a soft iron core? An electromagnet with a soft iron core has a much stronger magnetic field than a solenoid on its own. This is because of the electromagnetic properties of iron. The magnetic dipoles within the iron core line with the magnetic field created by the solenoid. This is how the magnetic field of the electromagnet becomes even stronger with an iron core.
