San Fernando, California was the first organized community in the San Fernando Valley and was named after Mission San Fernando Rey de España. It grew due to ranching activities in the late 19th century and experienced a brief gold rush in 1840. Today, San Fernando has a population of around 23,000 that is majority Latino. It has a diverse economy led by the Los Angeles Unified School District and manufacturing companies. San Fernando is surrounded by Los Angeles and other districts in the valley and retains its independent identity despite suburban growth.

The First City Of The Valley

San Fernando got the name, First City of the Valley, because it was the first organized community. The City has a community of attractive contrasts. San Fernando has a view of the panoramic. The City has a friendly community. San Fernando was named in honor Saint/King. The City grew because of the ranching activities.

History

In 1874 San Fernando got its name First City of the Valley. The mission de San Fernando Rey is now a vibrant center of manufacturing and commerce. In 1840 San Fernando enjoyed a brief gold rush. San Fernando was selected for settlement long before Los Angeles. Charles Maclay found San Fernando. San Fernando is the oldest city in the valley.

Geography

San Fernando is surrounded by Los Angeles. Even as the San Fernando Valley transformed itself from an agricultural area to a suburban one San Fernando retained its independence. The city of San Fernando has seen a significant demographic shift in recent years. The middle class whites once dominated the area in the 1950s. Latinos became the majority population. San Fernando is surrounded by the districts such as, Sylmar, Mission Hills, Pacoima, and Lake View Terrace

Demographics

In 2010 San Fernando had a population of 23,645. There were 51.0% whites, .9% African American, and 1.3% Native American. There were 5,967 households. In 2000 there were 23,564 households, and 4,832 families. For every 100 females there were 100.7 males. There were 6,291 housing units at an average density of 2,649.9 per square mile.

Economy

The top employers in the city are LAUSD, PureTek, and more. LAUSD is the number one company that has 490 employees. PureTek is number two company that has 400 employees. The County of Los Angeles is number six with the number of employees of 275.

Education

San Fernando is served by the LAUSD district. The LAUSD schools are San Fernando Middle school, High school, and elementary, also OMelveny elementary school, Morningside elementary, and more. The PUC schools in San Fernando are Charter Academy, Nueva Esperanza and more. These are the educational schools that are in San Fernando.
