Oil Distribution Within A Journal Bearing

An oil journal bearing has a maximum radial clearance that is equal to the eccentricity between the shaft and bearing centerline plus the minimum clearance or oil film thickness. The eccentricity factor, calculated as the eccentricity divided by the maximum radial clearance, influences the minimum oil film thickness, journal attitude angle, pressure distribution, peak pressure angle, friction, horsepower loss, oil flow through the loaded region, and temperature of high-speed bearings, which can become a limiting factor.

Oil distribution within a journal bearing

If the maximum radial clearance is Cr then Cr = e + Hm where e is the eccentricity between the shaft and bearing centreline and Hm is the minimum clearance (oil film thickness) an eccentricity factor can be calculated from n = e / Cr Factors involved with the eccentricity factor n are; minimum oil film thickness, journal attitude angle, pressure distribution, peak pressure angle, friction, horsepower loss and oil flow through the loaded region. The latter three determine the temperature of the bearing which for high speed bearings can be a limiting factor.
