High Axial Shift Issues in Turbine Unit II

North Chennai TPS Unit II has experienced a high axial shift problem in its 210 MW Siemens turbine since 1999. During overhauls, damage was found on thrust pads and pitting marks on axial keys in the high pressure rear bearing. Poor contact of the bearing's spherical seat on its support is suspected to cause shifting during transients. The existing spare bearing and support need inspection, and the high pressure rear bearing and cylindrical support require machining to ensure proper contact before replacing the damaged bearing. The shaft current earthing system must also be checked and properly grounded to prevent further pitting of the axial keys.

PROBLEM : PROJECT: HIGH AXIAL SHIFT IN TURBINE UNIT - II , NORTH CHENNAI TPS

North Chennai TPS Unit II , 210 MW Seimens Turbine has to deal with high axial shift problem since 1999. The axial shift steadily increases crossing alarm levels after every overhaul. During inspection of HP rear bearing during each overhaul damages were observed on thrust pads and also severe, pitting marks observed on axial keys on either side of the bearing. The contact of Bearing No.2 spherical seat on its support is suspected to be poor , leading to shifting of Bearing No.2 during transient operations. The existing spare bearing along with support is to be inspected by SAS, Secunderabad for replacing with the existing bearing. The HP rear bearing along with cylindrical support has to be machined at BHEL Hardwar for proper contact. The shaft current earthing system provided has to be checked and properly earthed to avoid pitting of axial keys
