Predisposing: Precipitating:: Family History Age Diet/ Sedentary Lifestyle Stress

Family history and age can predispose individuals to developing hypertension. Stress and an unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyle can precipitate high blood pressure. Over time, increased vascular resistance and constriction leads to increased afterload, decreased blood flow to organs like the kidneys, and increased renin secretion, activating the renin-angiotensin system and further increasing blood pressure through vasoconstriction and sodium retention. If left untreated, long-term high blood pressure can damage organs like the kidneys, brain, heart and arteries. Proper treatment includes lifestyle modifications like diet and exercise as well as medication to control blood pressure and prevent further organ damage.
