Course Syllabus for Newspaper/ ZYLAR Zip Your Lips And Read The Zylar team is responsible for
writing, editing, and designing the school newspaper. The emphasis of this class is writing and desktop publishing. Students will learn hard-news, feature, sports, and editorial writing styles. In addition, students will learn editing skills and desktop publishing skills. Overall Course Goals: To produce a quality newspaper as an end result to instruction. To teach organization, planning, successful group dynamics and leadership. To study newspaper coverage and audience needs. To teach time management skills. To teach writing and reporting techniques. To teach copy editing and proofreading of written materials. To teach layout and design skills. Grading Formula: Each students grade will be determined using the following formula: 50% Assignments: This includes completion of assigned class work 50% Participation: This includes cooperative participation in groups and individual Late Work: Missed deadlines cause problems for all staff members. For every day an assignment is late, 10 points will be deducted from the actual grade. Academic Honesty: Plagiarism is defined as the use of another persons work and presented as ones own and the unacknowledged use of that work in ones own work. Plagiarized work will result in a grade of a zero along with a teacher-parent conference. Students must cite each source used for all written compositions. Basic Rules for Survival: Newspaper is much more than a class. Being a part of The ZYLAR is being part of a family. Every position is extremely important. If one member of this staff fails, the effort of others is damaged. Remember this: Talking negatively about staff members or editors will not be tolerated. If a problem arises, come to the adviser so that we can solve it together. Together we will continue to produce a quality newspaper. However, the key word is TOGETHER! Students who consistently DO NOT behave, participate in class, turn in assignments, follow directions, and / or follow class room or school rules will NOT be allowed to interview outside of the classroom or use school equipment such as cameras, camcorders, or other electronic devises. Classroom Rules / Expectations: 1. Be on time and bring your supplies with you to class.
2. Do not talk while the teacher or student presenter is speaking. 3. Keep your hands and feet to yourself. 4. Do not use obscene or offensive language. 5. No horseplay or inappropriate behavior in the classroom or in the hallways. Attendance: Attendance is vital. Our ability to provide a quality on-time newspaper is dependent on your participation in and out of the classroom. Deadlines: Deadlines will be strictly enforced. For all of your news stories and page layouts, you will earn TWO grades: one for simply making the deadline and another for the actual assignment.
