I firmly believe during the next 25 years the technological wave that is nanotechnology will change our lives and expand our civilization to realms that are only dreams today. Since nanotechnology is still in in its infancy, its our responsibility to set that wave in motion. Hence, I have a strong interest in carrying out research in nanotechnology. I have carried out a finite element study to understand the mechanical behaviour of carbon nanotube reinforced composites. I am specifically interested in modelling the behaviour of nanomaterials in applications such as energy storage, nanobots, NEMS/MEMS and load bearing applications, computational and experimental studies of properties of nanomaterials, multiscale modelling of nanomaterials, mechanical properties and behaviour of carbon nanotubes and graphenes. For my undergraduate research project, I have modelled and analysed one endcapped single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) reinforced composites using ABAQUS finite element code. Carbon nanotube reinforced composites were analysed for stress distributions under axial loading and critical failure locations were identified to occur in the end-cap region on the interface of SWCNT and the matrix. The results and the exposure of this study have motivated me to enquire your research in energy-storage materials with nanostructures as novel systems based on nanomaterials such as fuel cells with carbon nanomaterials as electrolytes/membranes, supercapacitors with carbon nanotubes and/or graphene hybrid electrodes, Lithium-Ion batteries with carbon nanotube electrodes, etc. have demonstrated promising results for efficient energy conversion and high-density energy storage technologies, which in the face of depleting natural energy sources and the ever developing and expanding technologies of portable electronic devices and electric/hybrid vehicles, would be extremely useful innovations. I am certain the technical skills and academic knowledge I gathered from my previous study could be readily applied to carry out your research successfully and I firmly believe this opportunity is the bridge that will allow me to cross in to field of hi-tech applications of nanomaterials which is essentially my future career goal.
