Yr9 Lesson Plan (23/5)

The document provides details of a Year 9 mathematics lesson on surface area. The lesson objectives are to draw nets of regular solids, calculate surface areas of prisms and regular solids using formulas, and calculate surface area of prisms using the area of a uniform cross-section. Students will participate in mental exercises on area of sectors, learn about surface area through presentations, work independently on textbook exercises, and be informed about an upcoming surface area competition.

Lesson: Surface area

Measurement and Geometry Calculate the surface area and volume of cylinders and solve related problems (ACMMG217) Solve problems involving surface area and volume of right prisms (ACMMG218) Lesson Outcomes
Students should be able to: 1. Draw nets of regular solids 2. Calculate the surface area of prisms and regular solids using standard formulae 3. Calculate the surface area of prisms using the area of its uniform cross-section

Prior Learning
Students should have a general understanding of area of basic shapes and its related formulae. They should also have an understanding of the units of measurements associated to area of shapes from a previous lesson. Lesson Steps: TIME 11.22 - 11.30 8 mins ACTIVITY Mental Students to attempt mental questions on the board. Questions will focus on area of sectors: nding area, radius, and angle at the centre. Solutions to be discussed as a class. Surface area Teacher to introduce surface area by using both Prezi and SketchExplorer presentations. Students to make connections between the nets of solid and their associated surface area formulae. General formula for surface area of prisms to be derived. Students to attempt examples before solutions are discussed as a class. Students to copy notes as necessary 11.50 - 12.18 28 mins Independant work Students to complete Exercise 4.3 from the textbook. Students may also use this time to ask questions individually. Have Sum Fun introduction Students to be told about the upcoming competition. They will be reminded to ensure that all laptops must be recongured and referred to the IT support staff as required.
