Childrens Prior Learning (background) Children can all count up to the number five and recognize small numbers, students have heard of Birthdays and their own birthday months. Students have the ability to do set work on their own (if instructions are clear).

Teaching Skill Development (E.G. I want to improve my questioning skills and intend to .........) - I want to maintain control over the class and improve upon the way I keep control. - I want to maintain concentration with students (i.e. make sure I am using appropriate language, 8 word instructions) -To ask questions and speak to students with relevance, to stay on track with task and not lose where I am going with it.

Teaching and Learning Preparation

-Organise and create a large pictograph - Have images for pictograph ready for students to colour and stick on -Have my own example of a pictograph -All equipment out and ready to go (photo copy images, have pencils out)

Orientation /Introduction

How best to motivate and explain the importance of this lesson? This should be for about 5 minutes with links to prior learning or experiences.

Introduce the topic of Birthdays have a quick discussion about them. -Who knows which month their birthday is in? -How do you feel when it is your birthday? -Tell students which month their birthday is in (make sure to have a clear list about this) - Double and triple check they know their birthdays - Begin to introduce what we are making today. A pictograph! A pictograph will show us information. It will tell us how many birthdays are in each month. -FIRST KEY 8 word INSTRUCTION: Go and carefully colour in your present.

Middle

-Bring students back to floor -Ask students to recall which month their birthday is in and call on students to come to the front of the class and we will stick on their picture. After demonstrating this, ask students to go back to their table and write their names on their image. -When they have done than I will check it and they can glue it on - INSTRUCTION: Write your name on your present. Come back to me. (OPTIONAL DEPENDING UPON TIME). -After this is complete as students the following questions -Which month has the MOST amount of Birthdays -Which has the LEAST amount? - Do any months have NO birthdays? -Ask students why a pictograph is good? - Look at the display I made and compare the information.

Conclusion /Closure Ask yourself, How can I capture the main learning points of the lesson? Once again go over what a pictograph is. -What did we learn today? -Can anyone tell me what a pictograph shows us?

Extension Activities -Ask certain students more complex questions about the pictograph where necessary.

Classroom Management Time Management Content of lesson Childrens Attention Students achieving lessons Teaching Skill Development (Reflection) Overall I felt the lesson went reasonably well. The following are the areas in which I need to improve -Time Management -The way I speak to the students and convey what I am trying to say (I often over complicate simple tasks) - The way in which I manage students behavior (I.e. Student leaning on things, need to be quick and assertive to stop this behavior). For future lessons: -Make the graph longer and not as high, print out the names of the months in large text, print out heading. -Make sure I am extremely clear about instructions (keep writing down the eight word instructions) -Have a list of questions to ask students and plan when students will put their Birthdays down -Have a note pad to write down what students have said to put on display!
