T.S. TRIMBLE | | 19 February 1995 | | | ============================================== The following two charts show the ancestry of Rowan MAYFAIR, the thirteenth of the MAYFAIR witches. The first chart shows each person's name only once. For that reason there are lines making connections all over the place since many of those people were ancestors more than once. The second chart shows each child / parent connection, repeating names as often as was necessary. All the in-breeding of this family is fascinating. By following the various lines one can see that Rowan was descended from Talamasca member Petyr Van ABEL at least twenty-eight times. Probably more, since the book did not go into detail about the ancestry of Rowan's paternal grandmother, Suzette MAYFAIR. It only said that Suzette was descended from Maurice MAYFAIR (represented on the chart by the character "I" instead of "|"). Imagine being descended from someone 28 times! The greatest number of known descents that I have is 3 times -- from Nathaniel DONHAM Jr. (b. 1733 NJ). By the way, the book also suggested that Michael CURRY could also have been a MAYFAIR descendent. On page 677 of the paperback edition Michael said, "What if my ancestors worked in the Garden District? I don't know that they did or didn't. I know my father's mother was an orphan, reared at St. Margaret's. I don't think she had a legal father. What if her mother had been a maid in the First Street house... but my mind is just going crazy." Also the in-breeding makes people related in many ways. For example, Rowan MAYFAIR was the half-aunt, half 2nd cousin twice removed, and half 1st cousin once removed of Ellie MAYFAIR, her own adoptive mother. Rowan was those same relations to the lawyer Ryan MAYFAIR who was Ellie's first cousin. The family is also interesting because of the genetic aspect -- how the traits appeared over and over through the generations. Or, as Carlotta MAYFAIR said on page 699, "Incest, my dear, was the least of their sins, but the greatest of their schemes, incest to strengthen the line, to double up the powers, to purify the blood, to birth a cunning and terrible witch in each generation, going so far back its lost in European history." Enjoy the charts, but don't study them too much if you haven't completed the book yet. The charts only includes information from the first novel of the MAYFAIR witch series, "The Witching Hour".
