Symptoms and signs The signs and symptoms of Qi stagnation are gradual onset of throat pain, with spasm and a feeling of tension, which moves up and down, and is closely related with the emotional situation, a feeling as if there is a plum stone in the throat, depression, stress, a feeling of oppression over the chest, headache, a bitter taste in the mouth, insomnia, a poor appetite, a slightly purplish tongue with a thin coating, and a wiry pulse. Main formula

XIAO YAO SAN

Free and Relaxed Powder. This formula is good very

good at treating throat pain that is related to stress, anger and frustration, etc. Pang Da Hai Semen Sterculiae Scaphigerae 5 pieces, Jie Geng Radix Platycodi 6g, and Tu Niu Xi Radix Achyranthis 10g could be added into the prescription.

Alternative formulas

CHAI HU SHU GAN SAN

Bupleurum Soothing the Liver Powder. This formula is

good at treating the pain in the Internal organs. When there is throat pain together with some pain in the Internal organs, then this formula could be applied. Pang Da Hai Semen Sterculiae Scaphigerae 5 pieces, Jie Geng Radix Platycodi 6g, and Tu Niu Xi Radix Achyranthis 10g could be added into the prescription. YI GAN SAN Restrain the Liver Powder. This formula promotes the Qi circulation and relieves throat pain. Pang Da Hai Semen Sterculiae Scaphigerae 5 pieces, Jie Geng Radix Platycodi 6g, and Tu Niu Xi Radix Achyranthis 10g could be added to the prescription.

Modifications

1. If there is headache, add Chuan Xiong Radix Ligustici Chuanxiong 10g to regulate the Qi circulation and relieve the headache 2. If there is a poor mood, add Xiang Fu Rhizoma Cyperi 10g and Yu Jin Radix Curcumae 10g to promote the Liver-Qi circulation and remove the Qi stagnation 3. If there is irritability, add Huang Lian Rhizoma Coptidis 10g and Gou Teng Ramulus Uncariae cum Uncis 10g to clear Liver-Fire and calm the Shen 5. If the appetite is poor, add Yu Jin Radix Curcumae 10g and Mai Ya Fructus Hordei Germinatus 10g to promote the Qi circulation and improve the appetite.
