SCIENCE LESSON PLAN 5: Culminating Assessment
I. Objectives Students will be able to draw, label, and describe the essential structures and functions of plant and animal cells, compare and contrast the distinguishing characteristics of groups of organisms, and identify and explain traits of organisms that allow them to survive in their environment. (VA SOL Science) . !he student will investigate and understand that organisms are made of one or more cells and have distinguishing characteristics that play a vital role in the organism"s ability to survive and thrive in its environment. #ey concepts include a$ basic cell structures and functions% b$ classification of organisms using physical characteristics, body structures, and behavior of the organism% and c$ traits of organisms that allow them to survive in their environment.
(VA SOL Health)
.& !he student will demonstrate the interpersonal s'ills necessary to build healthy relationships. #ey concepts(s'ills include a$ the development of positive social s'ills% b$ the use of refusal and conflict)resolution s'ills% c$ effective verbal and nonverbal communication s'ills that convey care, consideration, and respect for self and others. (VA SOL Research) .* !he student will find, evaluate, and select appropriate resources for a research product. a$ Construct +uestions about a topic. b$ Collect information from multiple resources including online, print, and media. c$ ,se technology as a tool to research, organi-e, evaluate, and communicate information. d$ Organi-e information presented on charts, maps, and graphs. e$ .evelop notes that include important concepts, summaries, and identification of information sources. (NGSS) /S) 0S&) &. Conduct an investigation to provide evidence that living things are made of cells% either one cell or many different numbers and types of cells. /S) 0S&) 1. .evelop and use a model to describe the function of a cell as a whole and ways parts of cells contribute to the function. /S)0S&)2. ,se argument supported by evidence for how the body is a system of interacting subsystems composed of groups of cells. 2)0S2)&. Analy-e and interpret data to provide evidence that plants and animals have traits inherited from parents and that variation of these traits exists in a group of similar organisms. 2)0S2)1. ,se evidence to support the explanation that traits can be influenced by the environment.

2)0S3)1.,se evidence to construct an explanation for how the variations in characteristics among individuals of the same species may provide advantages in surviving, finding mates, and reproducing. 2)0S3)2. Construct an argument with evidence that in a particular habitat some organisms can survive well, some survive less well, and some cannot survive at all. 2)0S3)3. /a'e a claim about the merit of a solution to a problem caused when the environment changes and the types of plants and animals that live there may change. 2)0S&)&. .evelop models to describe that organisms have uni+ue and diverse life cycles but all have in common birth, growth, reproduction, and death. 2)0S2)&. Analy-e and interpret data to provide evidence that plants and animals have traits inherited from parents and that variation of these traits exists in a group of similar organisms. 2)0S2)1. ,se evidence to support the explanation that traits can be influenced by the environment. 2)0S3)1. ,se evidence to construct an explanation for how the variations in characteristics among individuals of the same species may provide advantages in surviving, finding mates, and reproducing. II. /aterials for 0earning Activities Students will need poster board, coloring utensils, mar'ers, pencils, computer, and Internet access. !eacher will need computers for students and poster board for students. III. 4rocedures for 0earning Activities Introduction 5 minutes$6 .iscuss with students what we have been learning about cell structures and functions, classification of organisms, and traits of organisms. !ell students that they are going to pic' one organism and create a poster presentation that displays what it is, a picture of the organism, traits, classifications, physical characteristics, body structures, behavior, a picture of the cell that organism is made of with labels and descriptions, and then they must present it to the class. Instructional strategies 6 5& hour$ &. Students will each get poster board. 1. !hey will each create a poster based on O78 living organism. 2. 9ithin the poster they will include the name of the organism, a picture, the type of cell within that organism, a picture with labels of the cell, classification of the organism, physical characteristics of the organism, body structures of the organism, behavior of the organism, traits, and adaptations of the organism. Summary 6 52 minutes$ Students will present their posters to the class and briefly discuss information about their chosen organism. 8xtensions(Connections) !his is the culminating assessment of all the previous lessons within the unit. It will determine the understanding and learning that too' place throughout the past 3 lessons. I:. Assessment Students will be assessed by information listed on poster and whether they completed the project completely, partially, or unsatisfactorily. ;ubric attached.

:. .ifferentiation 800s< Students can wor' in pairs to have help with any difficulty with writing or spelling. !hey also may print out and glue any pictures on their poster so that they have more time to wor' on writing and researching and do not have to spend so much time drawing and coloring. 0ower students< Students who are lower may also print and glue pictures rather than drawing and coloring if they desire so as to spend more time focusing on writing and researching. =igher students< =igher students may go above and beyond in any way they see fit. If they finish early they may research another animal, help other students, or read a boo'. :I. =ealth(Safety Safety ris'< !hey could damage the computers, although I do not thin' there are any safety ris's for the students themselves. 4revention strategy< #eep all li+uids and food away from computers. ;esolution strategy< Clean up computers.
