Comparison Chart: Modem Router

Modems encode and decode data to connect a home network to an internet service provider, while routers direct information from the modem to different devices within the network, distributing data to computers and phones. Routers allow for multiple connections within a network and provide additional security, but require a modem to actually connect to the internet. Modems can connect a single PC directly to an internet connection without a router.

Modems and routers are both involved in connecting your home PCs to the Internet.

The modem encodes and decodes data so that it can pass between your home network and your Internet Service Provider (ISP). The router, on the other hand, directs the in ormation collected by the modem to devices within that network. The modem brings the in ormation in, and the router distributes (or !routes") it to di erent devices like computers and phones.
