The impact Alija Izetbegovic has made on the recent history in Bosnia and Herzegovina was without the

doubt one of the most important in our whole history. He is a symbol of Bosnian resistance and independence, the constant struggle for self-recognition and awareness. He became the first independent leader of Bosnia since medieval times and the medieval kingdom. During the time before Yugoslavia's colapse he made a new party, Party of Democratic Action. Even in the times when the break was inevitable he was still suggesting a loose confederation which should preserve the state. Countrywide referendum of Bosnian independence was staged. And it results were rather positive, 99.4 percent of the citizens said that they would see Bosnia as an independent republic. But then the horrible war took place. Many people were killed, many more were expelled from the country. Some were forced to go into concentration camps, where grown men were often executed. During the war he fought for independence, and he promoted the idea of a multi-ethnic Bosnia under central control. All those years the bombings took place Alija Izetbegovic was in his goverment in the besieged city of Sarajevo, seeking a way to end the bloodshed. The war lasted for three and half years and it finally ended in Dayton, Ohio where the peace treaty was negotiated under the supervision of United States. Bosniaks were represented by Izetbegovic, while Croatian and Serb interests were represented by Tuman and Miloevid. That peace treaty ended the war and marked the beginning of a new era for Bosnia and Herzegovina. He was born in Bosanski amac but later moved to Sarajevo where, after the war he earned a law degree at Sarajevo University and remained engaged in politcs. He has a son, Bakir who followed him into politics. He was the author of several books, most notably Islam Between East and West and the Islamic Declaration. Not only he was a politician, he also was an activist, lawyer, author, and philosopher. In 1990 he became the first President of Bosnia and Herzegovina. He served in this role until 1996, when he became a member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, serving until 2000. During his life he also was imprisoned two times. Altough there are some disputies and controversies regarding Alija Izetbegovic, his life and presidency there is no argument regarding his constant struggle for the well-being of Bosnias citizens.
