Mumps: A Guide for Parents

Mumps is an acute infectious viral disease characterized by fever, headache, and swelling of the salivary glands. It is transmitted through direct contact with infected droplets or surfaces. The causative agent is a paramyxovirus that is spherical with spikes. There is no specific treatment, but rest, fluids, pain relief, and soft foods can help symptoms. Prevention is through the MMR vaccine and isolation of infected individuals for 9 days after swelling onset. Immunity is usually permanent after infection or vaccination.
