MUMPS
Epidemic paroitis, Contagious Parotitis

is an acute infectious and contagious viral disease, characterized by headache, anorexia, bodymalaise and fever. -- Symptoms last for 1 6 days. -Incubation period is 14 21 days. -- Common among chldren 5 15 years old.
Mode of transmission
-Direct
contact with droplet nuclei --Airborne droplets -- Contaminated formites
Causative Agent
General Characteristic: -Belongs to the Genus Rubalavirus parmyxoviridae. -A roughly spherical particle made up of concentric layers of fatty lipids, large protein molecules and nucleic acid. -Dotted with large spikes.
Laboratory Diagnosis
-Isolation
of the virus from clinical
samples -- Complement fixation test -- Neutralization test -- ELISA test
Treatment
There is no specific treatment for mumps. -- The application of intermittent ice or heat on the affected area. -- Acetaminophen or paracetamol for pain relief. -- Drink plenty of fluids, but avoid acidic foods and beverages. -- Complete bed rest. -- Eat foods that do not require a lot of chewing.
Prevention Control
-Immunization --
MMR (mumps, measles, rubella) immunization. -- Control of patients contact and immediate environment by isolation for 9 days from onset of swelling.
Immunity
-Immunity is permanent after a single attack. -Passive immunity is transferred from mother to offspring. -- Active immunity with live but attenuated mumps virus vaccine.
