Doane - Masquerade Reconsidered

This article reconsiders the concept of masquerade in feminist film theory. It argues that masquerade does not necessarily imply that a woman's identity is not her own or that she is alienated from her gender. Rather than seeing masquerade as masking or disguising a woman's true self, it can be understood as a playful performance and exploration of femininity and different modes of being a woman.
