Materials Engineering: Cast Irons

Cast irons have a microstructure and mechanical properties that depend on their carbon content, cooling rate, and alloying elements. There are several types of cast iron including gray, white, nodular, and malleable. Gray cast iron has a microstructure of ferrite and graphite flakes which gives it good compressive strength but low tensile strength and brittleness. Ductile or nodular cast iron has a spheroidal graphite morphology that increases its strength and ductility. Malleable cast iron is heat treated to convert iron carbides to temper carbon, producing a ductile ferritic structure suitable for machine parts.
