Codes and Standards Earthing

This document discusses codes, standards, and best practices for proper earthing and grounding systems. It outlines several important codes for earthing requirements, including those from India, the National Electrical Code of India, and the IEEE. The key aspects of a proper earthing system are selecting conductors to handle anticipated faults, using the right connectors, properly placing and spacing ground rods based on length and number, and selecting or preparing soil with low conductivity. Regular checks and measurements should be performed to ensure the earthing system limits step and touch potentials to safe levels for employee safety.

CODES AND STANDARDS The following are some of the important codes and standards which describe the

earthing requirements and methods: Indian Electricity Rules National Electrical Code (India) IS:3043 (Code of Practice for Earthing) API RP 14F (Design and Installation of Electrical Systems for Fixed and Floating Offshore Petroleum Facilities) IEEE Std. 142 (Recommended Practice for Grounding of Industrial and Commercial Power Systems)

Earthing
Size conductors for anticipated faults Select the right connector Pay attention to ground rod length, number, placement, and spacing Select/Prepare the soil with low conductivity Limiting step and touch potential to safe values for employee safety.

Checks and Measurements: 1)Check earth electrode and earth mat terminations for loose connection, contact, pitting and flash marks. 2)Inspect all terminations for salt formation and clean. 3)Ensure moisture level is maintained in earth pit. 4)Inspect the earth pit brick / concrete lining a n d p i t c o v e r f o r g o o d condition. 5)Ensure all pits have unique identification. 6)Measure earth resistance value of earth electrode / earth mat. 7)Maintain a register and record values and observations. 8)Apply thin layer of petroleum jelly at earth / electrode terminations. 9)If any reading is more than 4 ohms, inform supervisor and arrange f o r reconditioning the pits as per procedure. 10)List out and arrange for cement works and identification as required. 11)Ensure all the pit covers are in position.

12) Cancel the permit.
