Unit 1: Pre-production LO1

Comprehensively explain and present to a quality that reflects near-professional

standards fully detailed requirements and sources of requirements for a specific
media production

TASK

From all the pre-production you have carried out over the past year you need to pick one and
complete the following task.

You will need to show an excellent understanding of the requirements for the proposed
production and will be able to explain fully why each element is required.

You will give detailed explanations of how these requirements will be sourced and give full
consideration to codes of practice and regulatory issues.

From the table below you need to explain why each element was important to your chosen
production and detail how you would source them.

For example

Type Importance Sourcing

Equipment
Transport
Talent
Crew
Materials
Facility hire

Importance
It is important to have finances in place before production starts, as every producer needs to pay for
Equipment used such as Cameras, tripods, green screen, lighting and sound. For an Advert production
for example, a producer may also need materials such correct costumes, items for correct mise-en-scene
and talent in order to fulfil the desired effect. Crew will also be needed such as cameraman, soundman
lighting engineer researchers editors and runners in order to produce a professional looking advert.
Once all is complete facilities such as editing suits and postproduction equipment will be needed and
these cost a lot of money.

Importance

Before anything the first step should be arranging a
budget for the music video so that we know how much to
spend on each aspect of the production.

this budget should be as large a sum of money as
financially as in the long run it will pay for itself if it
becomes successful.

We should also remember that this budget also includes
post production as it is a very important step in creating
and production.

Firstly we need to find a qualified and experienced crew
as we want them to be able to operate the equipment
(such as a camera and editing software) to the best of the
equipments ability this also results in us purchasing or
hiring the best equipment in our budget as we want it to
look as professional and high quality as possible.

Our Talent is just as important as our equipment as its all
good and well having great filming equipment but we
also need something great to film to make it successful
and eye-catching this means the artist himself, perhaps
extras and back up dancers ext depending on the genre of
the music video.

Before we can get to our facility hire (which should be
scouted and located before hand) we need to hire a van or
bus to transport all our crew , talent and Equipment.

Time: Deadlines
Availability of
equipment Availability
of personnel (size of
team; roles)

Importance

Deadlines are the date and time in which your project or
work has to be handed in, this is very important as it is is
very unprofessional to not have work ready in time, this
should be met with no excuses as for example if a music
videos final deadline has been put in place the media for
the artists music video will have been advertised and
every fan will be expecting the video to be released on
music channels ect so a lot of other companies will also
be involved.

Another important aspect of sticking to a deadline is time
keeping this is why a schedule should be used as
everything needs to be preplanned in the preproduction so
that everything runs smoothing and nothing runs over
time that was set.

For example if the equipment, materials, talent and crews
will be hired and be expecting to work at a certain time
and day this shouldn't be altered or run over time as the
editing crew needs time to put the video together with
special effects.

Facilities: Production equipment
Post-production
equipment facility
houses

Importance
The producers of the music video being filmed will need
to have organised the equipment that will be needed
before hand, this is so if they need a certain piece of
equipment it will already be set up and ready to go
regarding the fact the a person who is using it has tested
to see how the machinery works so they already know
how to use it for example a dolly kit!

The post production facilities are just as important as the
set of the music video, many editing equipment is needed
such as sound studios, special effect equipment ect.

Materials: Original materials,
Archive and library
materials
Sound library materials,
Internet
Audio
Costumes

Importance

Original materials:
This is everything you have produced filmed and filmed
while creating your music video including the music. It is
useful as you don't need to worry about copy righting
some elses work and risk getting in legal trouble and the
artists music video will be completely new and exciting
to the target audience.

Archive and library materials:
is when footage would need to be added to your music
video without you creating it.the producers and crew will
need to get copy right permission.

Sound library materials:
Is a collection of all the sounds going to be used in the
song this is important as without the song being promoted
for the artist a video would be useless without it as the
whole point of a music video is to promote the artist and
song.

Internet:
this is important for research and promotional purposes, it
gives the most fast information on any subject and can be
used for social media if the artist wants the video to go
viral and seen by everyone.

Costumes:
During the Preproduction and plan the costumes will
have to be decided upon. this is important as the costume
is a key part the stereotype in a genre and it represents
what fashion the target audiences like to wear.

Sourcing

Locations: Recces
Limitations and risks:
Distance, access, cost,
weather

Importance
Location recces are created by the production crew to
map out the different locations they have found looking
for the right set for the music video. after finding several
locations they will which is the most suitable taking into
account things like: distance, cost, accessibility, weather,
access to hospitals bathrooms, fire stations.

This is important as the music video must have a budget
and this includes the amount of money spent driving all
the equipment and crew to the location including petrol
cost and hired vehicles.

Codes of
practice
and
regulation:
Location permissions
Clearances
Copyright
Health and safety
Insurance

Importance

Location permissions: after location scouting the crew
who is responsible for the sets music seek permission to
use the location and may even need to rent it from the
owner or local authority for the days they are shooting.

Clearances
you need to make sure that everything is cleared if in a
public location that there is permission granted to use
footage of everything in the area like people, scripts
,brand names, logos ect.

Copyright
This is when the producer of the music video and the
artist has ownership of all the footage taken and included
in the music video, this means that other people cannot
use the footage unless they have been given permission,
the consequences of using copyrighted footage is illegal.

Health and safety
On different sets for the Music video there are many
different hazards that could accrue such as heavy
equipment, sharp objects, electrical equipment, objects on
the ground and the crew needs to make minimising the
risks a priority.

Insurance
As there are many risks on set and it is important to have
insurance on all aspects of the set. this is when an you
pay the insurance company to safeguard the interests of
the equipment and people on set from uncertainty by
providing certainty of payment at a given contingency
