Exp.1 Hydrostatic Force

This document describes an experiment to verify the theoretical predictions of hydrostatic force on partially and fully submerged plane surfaces. The experiment uses a hydrostatic force demonstration unit to measure the force and center of pressure on a quadrant surface submerged in water. For a fully submerged surface, the theoretical force is equal to the product of water density, depth of immersion, and cross-sectional area. For a partially submerged surface, the theoretical force is equal to the product of water density, depth of immersion, width of surface, and height above the surface. The procedure involves measuring the dimensions of the quadrant, adding weights to the scale, adjusting the water level, and recording force and depth readings for different immersion levels.

(1) : Hydrostatic Force on a Plane Surface

Purpose: To verify the theoretical prediction of the resultant hydrostatic force and its point
of action on both (a) partially submerged and (b) fully submerged plane surface in a liquid.
Apparatus: Hydrostatic Force Demonstration Unit (Fig).

Theory:
!evie" the derivation of the resultant magnitude and point of action of hydrostatic force on a
submerged plane surface. #ist these e$pressions for a vertical surface that is (a) partially
submerged% and (b) fully submerged.
