End of unit Celebration

This special holiday is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November and falls on
November 27
th
this year.
Canadians also celebrate this special holiday on the 2
nd
Monday in October every year and
England has a similar celebration called the Harvest Festival.

It is a time for family, food and friends.a time to give thanks and reflect on lifes
blessings. A typical meal includes turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie!
In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians (who helped them survive the harsh winter of
their new colony) shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first
Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were
celebrated by individual colonies and states. It wasn't until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that
President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November.
With such a diversity of cultures and countries represented in our classes, we decided to
have our very own International Thanksgiving with all the Kindergarten children this year.

We are asking that each child brings a special dish from his/her country to share on the
day. We will all join together in the community room 10 at 11:30 until 12:30. After this
wonderful event you are invited to come to the KG-1 grade Winter Concert at 13:00. This
event will be for both parents and the students so please mark this special date on your
calendars.

In order for this to be a success we need each parent to bring a dish from their country. There will be a
sign up outside your childs classroom so that we can balance the savoury and sweet dishes. (See attached
sign up sheet).
Please include a note if it is a vegetarian dish or if it contains nuts due to dietary restrictions. Please
refrain from bringing in dishes with pork.

Happy Thanksgiving!
