Problem Solving: S6
Vocabulary:
Angle: the space between two lines or planes that intersect; the inclination of one line to another;
measured in degrees (or radians)
Oblique angle: An angle that is not a right angle or multiples of a right angle
Obtuse angle: An angle between 90 degrees and 180 degrees.
Right angle: An angle that is 90 degrees.
Straight angle: An angle of 180 degrees.
Sine: ratio of the length of the side opposite the given angle to the length of the hypotenuse of a
right-angled triangle
Cosine: ratio of the adjacent side to the hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle
Tangent: a straight line or plane that touches a curve or curved surface at a point but does not
intersect it at that point; the ratio of the length of the side opposite the given angle to the length of
the side adjacent to the given angle in a right-angled triangle

1. [Measurement, Trigonometry] Label the vertices to match the given angles.
Determine its attributes (features). Communicate your findings in the data table.

b. Read both of the following statements. Then circle the statement that is easier to say
and write:
The ratio of the length of side a, opposite angle A, to the length of the
hypotenuse.
or sin A
Note: Math often uses short forms and symbols to reduce writing. Sin A is shorter and
easier to say and write, but it means exactly the same as saying that other long

sentence shown above. So, Sin A is a simply a comparison of side lengths or a ratio
of side lengths. Note: the ratios Sine, Cosine, and Tangent only apply to right triangles.
2. [Trigonometry] Write the three primary trigonometric ratios for angle A in
question 1, shown above. (Use numbers, not just the formula. Write both the fraction
form and decimal form of the ratio.)

3. [Algebra] Working backwards is a problem-solving strategy. Given the ratio of
two sides, find the missing side length.
Example. Complete the chart. Find side length a.
Side length a Side length c Ratio (fraction
form)
Ratio (decimal
form to 4 dp.)
? 5

5

.6000

We use both the ratio in fraction form AND the ratio in decimal form to find the
missing side length a.
Since

5
= 0.6, then using opposite operations it must follow that a = (5)(0.6).
So a = 3.
Practice: Solve for the missing side length, x.
a)

10
= 0.6000 b)

20
= 0.8660 c)

4
= 0.5000

4. [Trigonometry] Calculator skills. Note: The angle, measured in degrees, may be shown
with or without brackets. Calculators often add the brackets. Eg. Sin 30 = Sin (30) = 0.5
Some calculators use reverse entry such as 30 then sin to get 0.5
Using a scientific calculator (in degree mode), determine the following ratios to 4
decimal places:
a) Sin(60) = Cos(60)= Tan(60) =

b) Sin 30 = Cos 30 = Tan 30 =

c) Sin(45) = Cos 45 = Tan(45) =

d) Sin(120) = Cos(120) = Tan(120) =

e) Sin(150) = Cos(150) = Tan(150) =

What is an obtuse angle?

5. [Trigonometry] Working backwards is a STRATEGY to solve problems. On a
calculator using inverse sine, inverse cosine, and inverse tangent, determine the
missing angle of each:
a) Sin
-1
(0.5)= Cos
-1
(0.5)= Tan
-1
(0.5)=

b) Sin
-1
(0.8660)= Cos

(0.8660)= Tan

6. Create and solve a unique question requiring the inverse sine calculation. Draw and
label a diagram to help visually model your question and solution.

7. Create and solve a unique question requiring the inverse cosine calculation. Draw
and label a diagram to help visually model your question and solution.

8. Create and solve a unique question requiring the inverse tangent calculation. Draw
and label a diagram to help visually model your question and solution.

9. [Geometry] In the space provided, use a straightedge and draw an XY-Cartesian
plane for the range X {0, 10 cm} and domain Y {0, 10 cm}, (so just show Quadrant
I). Draw a quarter circle, of radius 10 units, that is centered on the origin. Plot point
M(6,8).
A) How far is point M from the origin?
B) What units are being used?
C) What angle does line OM make with the x-axis?

10. [Personal finance] A home is purchased for $250 000 today. It appreciates 3% each
year. [Note: To appreciate means to ________________ in value.]
Neatly communicate this information in table form. Title each column appropriately.
[Use the factor of 1+percent change to quickly find the next value]

a) Circle the following formula that describes the value of the home in 10 years?
V = (250000)+(10)(1.03) or V = (250000)(1 + .03)
10

b) Estimate the value of the home at 6 months. $______________

11. [Powers] Simplify each expression. Round to 2 decimal places, if required.
a) $250000(1 + 0.03)
0
$250000(1 + 0.03)
10
$250000(1 + 0.03)

b) Write a single EQUATION to represent the connection between the value, V,
of a $250000 home that appreciates 3% per year, for n years. [Hint: Similar
to the expressions in 11a,b,c.]

c) Use your equation to determine the value of the home at 0.5 years.
