NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 3. OBSERVING, DOCUMENTING, AND ASSESSING TO SUPPORT YOUNG CHILDREN AND FAMILIES
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs understand that child observation, documentation,
and other forms of assessment are central to the practice of all early childhood professionals. They a) know
about and understand the goals, benefits, and uses assessment. They b) know about and use systematic
observations, documentation, and other effective assessment strategies c) in a responsible way, d) in
partnership with families and other professionals, to positively influence the development of every child.

Brief Description of Evidence:
During the summer semester of 2013, while enrolled in ECED100: Introduction to Early Childhood
Education, I completed a case study on a single child and series of assignments that would demonstrate how
to formally compile a portfolio assessment for that child.
Analysis of What I Learned:
By observing children in a natural learning environment, I can adapt my style of teaching and approach
to each individual child by documenting his/her learning progress. Accurate documentation and observation
will benefit me as the teacher. When it is time for parents to discuss their childs learning with me, I can
explain to them where their child is based on my findings. If other action is needed, the documentation and
observations can be used as evidence to support a child. Theorists Piaget and Vygotsky have a very systematic
view of breaking down cognitive development in each childs age or stage. I can use a model of assessment
from these theories to help guide my teaching in the classroom.
How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:
This assignment has prepared me to set goals and plan an effective curriculum that will fulfill a variety
of forms of assessment such as developmental checklists, anecdotal records, and the collection of artifacts. It
is important that as a teacher I am comfortable with the variety of ways to document and assess a childs
progress in my classroom. Partnering and communicating curriculum implementation with families and other
professionals is the key to positively influence a childs growth and development.
