Writing Minilesson: Nonfiction
Grade: 4
Common Core State Standard: W.4.2: Write informative/explanatory texts to
examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly
Objective: SWBAT to write topics that they will use to write nonfiction pieces.
Materials:
Chart Paper
Graphic Organizers
Procedures:
Lesson Introduction:
o Writers, we have been studying nonfiction, and I know how much
you all love to read nonfiction. Well boys and girls, you are going to be
able to write nonfiction as well. To be able to write nonfiction you
must think of a topic to write about. In nonfiction, we read and write
about real things that we can use real facts to support. So today we are
going to brainstorm and write possible topics that we could use to
write our own nonfiction pieces.
Teach and Model
o On an overhead projector, show the students the graphic organizer
they will be using. First lets talk about possible general topics you
could write your nonfiction pieces on, but you will all come up with
subtopics to write about within these topics.
o I would like you to turn and talk to a partner about nonfiction topics
you know a lot about, and nonfiction topics you would like to research
more about. Then we will brainstorm ideas together.
o After the turn and talk, scaffold students to say broader topics to write
about such as jobs, history, places and things, people, sports, science,
and animals. Write this list on chart paper.
Guided Practice
o Now I would like us to brainstorm topics within these broader topics
to write about. Some of the topics I am thinking of are doctors, The
American Revolution, New Jersey, Martin Luther King, Jr., Football,
Storms, and Dogs. Write these topics on chart paper.
o Lets turn and talk with our partners to brainstorm more subtopics
within these categories that we can write about. Remember to think of
three topics you know a lot about, and three topics you would like to
research more about.
o After the turn and talk, have the students volunteer their topics and
write them on another piece of chart paper.
Independent Practice
o Have students go back to their desks and fill out their graphic
organizers with topics they would like to write their nonfiction pieces
on. If they finish their graphic organizer, they can start researching
their topics to find facts that support their topics.
Assessment:
I will know if students met the objective if they are able to create topics that
are real things that can be supported with facts. If students are unable to
meet the objective I can pull those students for a guided writing lesson.
