The importance of Global Governance
Imagine theres no countries, it isnt hard to do; nothing to kill or die for and no religion too;
imagine all the people, living life in peace.- John Lennon. Global governance, in essence, aims for what John
Lennon dreamed about, peace around the world. Through organizations, institution, businesses and
governments, global governance focuses on international regulation that will ultimately unify countries from all
over the world. Communication and interdependence among nations has made global governance crucial for the
stability and well being of the people; it provides opportunities for global growth and helps prevent future
conflicts among countries.
Global governance is a very broad ideal that is aspired for, that is why it is made up of different
organizations that have specific objectives. Some of these include the World Trade Organization, the
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the UN Childrens Fund (UNICEF), the International
Telecommunication Union and the World Health Organization. Each one of them addresses a specific problem
that has raised global awareness, for example UNICEF. People from all over the world, doctors, nurses, college
graduates, volunteers, among others are willing to leave their home country to help and make a difference in a
childs life. Religion, languages, background and nationality are all forgotten, their only purpose is to work
together for something bigger than themselves.
In spite of the efforts made by these organizations, there are times when they do not find the
international support they require. The lack of an overreaching global institution with the power to implement,
monitor and enforce the agreements reached, compromises the efficiency of these organizations. There are
times when a problem or movement is not considered a priority by some countries, and without their
participation, the movement cannot take place. For example, Chinas refusal to participate in The World Trade
Center almost jeopardized the movements purpose and therefore limited international trade. The Interpol, the
worlds largest police organization, has had problems carrying out justice when it comes to dealing with the
local government. Interpol was not able to convict Napoleon Gmez, a trade union leader from Mexico, in spite
of having over ten arrest warrants; Mexicos government refused to convict him. Although organizations like
the Security Council, Interpol and the World Bank are recognized and respected internationally, their work and
authority is limited
Peace between countries must rest on the solid foundation of love between individuals- Indira Gandhi
(1917-1984). Taking into account the limitations and errors made, every country must make the compromise of
providing the support and help needed for these institutions. Each organization should have several
representatives in charge of dealing with the local government and therefore make sure that they are doing what
was agreed upon. Prime ministers and delegates of each nation, as an act of cooperation, should become
responsible in providing the international representatives the resources and assistance needed to fulfill their
task. Publicity and propaganda to raise social awareness will also become a necessary asset; the people need to
know what is taking place and therefore gain their approval as well as their support.
Global governance calls for the cooperation of each nation as well as of the people within them.
Ongoing problems like human trafficking, terrorism, human rights violations and exploitation can all be greatly
reduced with international unification. Through the support of the government of each country, and
organization representatives, all previous limitations will be left behind. Airports, roads and ships will be more
secure, criminals will not be able to avoid prison and the quality of human life will increase significantly.
Through the media and world news, people will become aware of the movements, providing them the
opportunity to join and make a difference. Globalization has made international collaboration essential and with
their help, we are one step closer to breaking free of the borders that limit and divide us.
