Vibration Assignment 4

This document outlines an assignment on vibration involving two systems. The first system consists of two masses connected by a spring, where one mass slides and the other rolls on the base. Students are asked to derive equations of motion, determine natural frequencies assuming equal masses, and sketch the mode shapes. The second system replaces the single spring with two springs and asks students to derive equations of motion using energy conservation, determine natural frequencies if masses and springs are equal, and sketch the mode shapes.

Assignment 4
1. A system consists of mass m1, homogeneous cylinder (with mass m2 and radius r) and spring
(with spring constant k) as shown in Figure A4-1. With respect to the base, the mass is
sliding without friction and the cylinder is rolling without slipping.

Figure A4-1
a. Derive equations of motion of the system in using force-acceleration method.
b. For m1 = m2 = m, determine the system natural frequencies.
c. Determine and sketch the mode shapes relating to their natural frequencies.
2. A system consists of block mass m1, homogeneous cylinder (with mass m2 and radius r) and
springs (with spring constant k1 and k2) as shown in Figure A4-2. With respect to the base,
the mass is sliding without friction and the cylinder is rolling without slipping on the block.

Figure A4-2
a. Derive equations of motion of the system in using method of energy conservation.
b. For m1 = m2 = m and k1 = k2 = k, determine the system natural frequencies.
c. Determine and sketch the mode shapes relating to their natural frequencies.
