The Haitian Revolution from 1791-1804 was a revolt by Haitian slaves against French colonial rule due to the extreme brutality and inequality they faced. The 500,000 Haitian slaves far outnumbered the 32,000 white French landowners and faced torture for minor offenses as well as racial discrimination. Was this revolution worth the blood shed?

The most important of these colonies was Saint Domingue (later Haiti), which had 500,000 slaves, 32,000
whites, and 28,000 free blacks (which included both blacks and mulattos).
Several prominent deputies in the National Assembly belonged to the Society of the Friends of Blacks,
which put forth proposals for the abolition of the slave trade and the amelioration of the lot of slaves in the
colonies.
The British land owner were showed more gratitude and the normal civilians were treated like peasants.
To protect their investments, French slaveholders had to learn at least a minimal amount about their slaves.
One of the most astute commentators, Mdric-Louis-Elie Moreau de Saint-Mry, wrote a massive twovolume work on life in Saint Domingue in the 1780s.
The French landowner used to torture their slaves extremely if they go against their command and as the
slaves got raged for their less amount of wage.

The Haitian revolution which showed the involvement of slavery and racial profiling,
which made a drastic enrage to the haitian civilians to seek for independence against
the french mens. The Haitian civilians were going through torture and inequality due to
their skin color, as the frenchmen or landowners were taking advantage for their skin
tone, have better knowledge, came from a wealthy estate and they seek to have power
to treat them like filth. Which the Haitian people needed to go through justice and seek
revenge from the torture which they were facing.

The Haitian revolution took place from (17911804) against the french men as
they were treating them like filth for their skin tone, the french took the advantage that
they thought were more powerful through their skin tone and the Haitian thought that
respect couldnt be served through skin tone and they are not supposed to be tortured
from foreigners. In middle of slavery and torture there were some specific people, they
could get freedom and shared the same liberty with French mens as they were called
mulattos. By doing a religious ritual called Voodoo it gave them the vision to stand up
against their masters and the enlightenment came from France revolution as they were
struggling against inequality. In february 21, 1791 the civilians rose up started by

poisoning and attacking their masters, destroyed trades by burning of crops like corns,
cocoa and sugar plantation and in less than 2 months the civilians were capable of
murdering 3000 to 4000 french men. By 1792, slave rebels controlled the country and
french assembly announced the free rights of civilians to save by it didnt help at all. The
revolution was leaded by a general named L'Ouverture as he rose up from slavery and
raised by the landowners of his parents but still he wanted justice for cruelty for his
kind and he lead all the command for justice. As the haitian civilian traded goods to
Spain and in other hand they received weapons, as they wanted Haiti justice from
France. July 1804 the haitian lead the French to flee from their country leading the
french to drop their population from 32,000 to 20,000. When Napoleon got in charge the
French were capable of clinching Haiti back by imprisoning L'Ouverture in 1807.

Haitian slaves were being brutally punished at the time by their landowners for
conducting a small mistake or disobeying their command, through the mind the haitian
slaves as they thought, why are they being brutally punished? As they were being
harshful used, treated like scrap and which lead Haitian civilians to seek for justice. The
specific reason most of the enraged to stand up against is being tortured and unequal to
society. A specific reason shows the presence of slavery is shown in an article called
Slavery and the Haitian Revolution which shows The most important of these colonies
was Saint Domingue (later Haiti), which had 500,000 slaves, 32,000 whites, and 28,000
free blacks (which included both blacks and mulattos). it shows the larger population of
the Haitian were slaves compared to mulatto the difference population is surreal and
this is the cause it enraged them.

From the exact article shown above another

presence of slavery is The French landowner used to torture their slaves extremely if

they go against their command and as the slaves got raged for their less amount of
wage. and which describes the uprise of Haitians is due to being less paid for the
amount of work and being showed cruelty for the smallest matter. this shows that
Haitian stood up to reason of being tortured and misbehaved for the smallest matter and
everybody was unequally treated in society.

Haitian civilians faced inequality in society due towards the rulership of Frenchmen
in their own country, the main reason is skin tone difference the French men were
shown more gratitude and leadership, as for the haitian they were no near close to their
power. The reference of racism in their society is shown in an article called The Haitian
Revolution which shows At the top there were the white colonists, or blancs, who
owned most of the property. which it says that there are three colonist, the most power
and gratitude were given towards the Frenchmen and mass population of this colony
were French. The presence of racism is shown in the same article shown above which
shows This legally authorized violence exacerbated slaves poor living conditions it
defines that Haitian slaves were getting enraged by their living conditions and towards
the foreigners they are living in harsher state. The Haitian werent just being equally
treated, shown slavery and also being racially captivated by the rules of French men, as
the French benefited most of the lust than towards the civilians and as from them they
were living in more harsher state.

At the revolution the Haitian went through many sort of torture and war to view
independence from France. Indeed they saw success but in they fell into one of the
most demiseful situation of all time economy and financial problem. Which lead the

civilians to go through poverty, lack of supplies and scarcity which made their economy
fall really in a bad situation. The reason for Haiti to fall in an economical problem was
that The slaves killed 4,000 whites and burned or destroyed 180 sugar plantations and
hundreds of coffee and indigo plantations (Slavery and the Haitian Revolution) it
described that Haitian people destroyed their own resources and either than just
burning the plantations, they could have saved it and trade it for money. The other
reason was for the fall of the economy is due to from the article Slavery and the Haitian
Revolution is L'Ouverture seized by the French and shipped to France. He died months
later in prison at Fort-de-Joux in the Jura region. The French manipulated general

L'Ouverture to capture him, leading them to lose their powerful leader and causing Haiti
to fall into a great trap leading them to take unwise decision. The reason for the financial
and economical fall was due to the manipulation of the French and even they did their
own lose, but indeed going through this problems at least it ended having an
independent country.

As the Haitian were ruled by the French, as France also went through revolution
and which there are some similarities between the revolution between Haiti and France.
The blood shed on the French revolution was required due to freedom of civilians which
Haiti and France revolution shared the same similarities. The french people, especially
the third estate people were tortured, ruled by the noble, poverty, Third estate payed
taxes, given lower wages, and lived in harsh conditions which the third estate thought
they were being overly used and given less gratitude from the government. There is a
quote which is demands freedom for mankind is Indulgence for the royalists, cry certain
men, mercy for the villains! No! mercy for the innocent, mercy for the weak, mercy for

the unfortunate, mercy for humanity.(On the Moral and Political Principles of Domestic
Policy, Robespierre). Which the French people went through due to revolution because
the government cared more for the noble and less towards the lower classes. In another
hand France faced a different problem as they went through greedy, violent and power
demanding rulers which made them go through several downfalls. The french revolution
went through some laws which consisted inequality and idiotic rules that the civilians
demanded peace from this torture. Which the people fought through some difficult
situation to establish rights of every single man and abolish inequality.

The bloodshed was required for Haiti to go through revolution and in the end it
resulted as freedom .The Haitian civilians went through such trouble and gore after
going through independence from France and even after the independence the civilians
couldnt see

freedom due to economical. But even being harshly treated, shown

racism, given less gratitude, and shown inequality towards the people, even if being in
an harsh economic atleast Haiti is now an independent country and has freedom. Thats
why the bloodshed was required for Haiti because independence is much more better
being ruled and than other civilians.
