Learning Goals
Learning Goals for Todays Session
To understand learning goals and success
criteria
To learn how to effectively develop
meaningful learning goals and success
criteria
To deconstruct our learning goals and
success criteria

Assessment
Learning Task
Learning Task
Outlines that activity that the students will
be doing
It is linked to the learning goal and the
success criteria
It is not the learning goal but is connected
to the learning goal

Learning Task
Here is an example of a Learning Task:
Our school is retiling a rectangular area in the Kindergarten
classroom. The long side of the construction area will be 15 tiles
long and 8 tiles short for the short side. How many tiles will
they need in total?

Learning Goals and Growing Success
Assessment for learning and as learning requires that students and
teachers share a common understanding of what is being
learned
Learning goals clearly identify what students are expected to
know and be able to do, in language that students can readily
understand
Teachers develop learning goals based on the curriculum
expectations and share them with students at or near the
beginning of a cycle of learning
Teachers and students come to a common understanding of the
learning goals through discussion and clarification during
instruction

How to develop a Learning Goal?
Developing Effective Learning Goals
Developing Effective Learning Goals
Success Criteria and Growing Success
Success Criteria and Growing Success
Students and teachers must share a common
understanding of what constitutes success in
learning
Success criteria describe, in specific terms,
what successful attainment of the learning goals
looks like
Assessment and instruction is guided by the
achievement chart for the particular subject or
discipline

Success Criteria
Use clear language that is meaningful to the
students
Directly involve students in identifying,
clarifying, and applying those criteria in their
learning
Examine samples of student work together to
help students understand what constitutes
success and provides a basis for informed coconstruction of the success criteria

Success Criteria
Success Criteria
The success criteria should be open to review and
revision, guided by the teachers professional
judgement, as students progress towards achievement
of the learning goals
Teachers can enhance their understanding of success
criteria and build common knowledge about levels of
achievement through teacher moderation
The success criteria are used to develop an
assessment tool, such as a checklist, a rubric, or an
exit card (i.e., a students self-assessment of learning)

Working On It
Activity - Mathematics
Consider the following learning task for a grade
4 class:
Our school is retiling a rectangular area in the Kindergarten
classroom. The long side of the construction area will be 15 tiles
long and 8 tiles short for the short side. How many tiles will
they need in total?
Solve the problem above.
What could the learning goal be?
What could the success criteria be?

Activity - Writing
Using the writing sample provided, work with a partner
to identify the potential Success Criteria that can be coconstructed with the students
Consider all four areas of the Achievement Chart

teaching assignment
In small groups, take turns analyzing each
LG and SC
Use the Achievement Chart to determine
which categories the goals and success
criteria fall under (i.e., K, TH, Ap, C)
