Diaries of Soldiers
Introduction
(10 pts)In this project my partner and I are going to make two diaries with one from the perspective of a union
soldier and the other from a confederate soldiers perspective. This will give the audience a very detailed
and personal account of the struggles and battles that these soldiers actually had to face. The thing that we are
tryingto accomplish is to write these diaries as if we are actually these soldiers. I am very excited to do this
project because I think it is very cool to be writing about such an important war as if I was actually there! The
main value of our project is that it will give the reader emotional depth on how people felt during this time as
well as seemingly eye witness accounts of the events in this war. In this project we will tell you about the battle,
the tragedies, and the emotions during this time from the perspective of someone actually experiencing it.
Essential/Driving Research Question (5 pts)
1. What problem or issues have you discovered that needs to be solved?
The main problem is that people seem to forget that the Civil War was an actual war that people actually had to
live through. They really do not realize that these were young men killing other young men all while cannons
and guns are firing all around them. Most people really do not think about the fact that people constantly lived
in fear.
2. What proposals do you have in order to help solve the identified issues?
I propose that we write two different diaries with one from the view point of a Union soldier and the other from
the view point of a Confederate soldier. This will allow our audience to be able to feel what it was like to be in
this war.
Standards (30 pts) 8th Grade Georgia Studies. Standards / AKS analyze the impact of the Civil War and
Reconstruction on Georgia (GPS) (8SS_F2007-37)
VOCABUARY: In every single project make sure you ALWAYS list the vocabulary (THIS SHOULD
BEWORDS YOU LEARNED THROUGH YOUR RESEARCH.
Lincoln, March to the Sea, Union Blockade, Gettysburg, Andersonville Prison, Emancipation Proclamation
Intended Outcome (10 pts)
My hope is that our project will teach people more about life in the civil war than they already
knew. They hopefully will look at my project and realize the hardships soldiers in the confederacy and union
had to deal with. I think that people who see our project will have a greater respect for the brave men who
fought in this war. Some of the things theyll learn will include the battles, camp life, and diseases that soldiers
faced. I also want the people to feel the emotions of the soldier. My biggest hope in this entire project is that the
people who read these diaries will begin to think about not only the men who died to unite our country but also
the men who died for their beliefs.

Result (10 pts)
In this project our expected results did not match our final results in the sense that our final results were
much better. Our final product is a series of diary entries that are in a cursive typed font. They are burned and
dirty and crumpled in order to look more authentic for a museum piece. Thanks to my special methods, these
diary entries look like they are actually from the civil war period. They were printed on parchment paper in two
different cursive fonts one for each soldier. The two soldiers who wrote the diary entries are brothers who were
caught on the opposite sides of this tragic war but end up becoming closer because of it.
This is useful to others in the sense that it is a short glimpse of the Civil War. Readers will be
transported into the war by simply reading these diaries. The feelings will flood form our project and due to its
appearance making you think that it was actually made many decades ago. My partner and I have written these
diaries as the people of this time would write these. Our project also talks about camp life and life in
Andersonville Prison. It also gives you a feel to what laid ahead for some of the men who entered battle. It is for
these reasons that our project is incredibly useful to those who look at it.
Reflection (10 pts)
I learned many things about the Civil War itself but I most of all learned about Gettysburg and
Andersonville Prison. I had no idea just how terrible the condition in that prison were. I still have a lot of
trouble believing that people would do that to others. It was pretty interesting learning about the group known
as the Andersonville Raiders who caused mayhem and chaos in the prison. It was even more interesting hearing
how the group known as the Regulators rose up to stop them. The main things I learned about Gettysburg was
what events specifically took place during the battle as well as the general troop placement.
