5th Grade Language Arts Lesson Plan 2

The lesson teaches 5th grade students about comparing and contrasting stories by analyzing narrators' points of view. Students will read three short stories and identify each narrator's point of view and how it influences the description of events. They will then work in groups to write and act out their own short stories from assigned points of view. The teacher will facilitate a discussion about narrators and record the student presentations to create a class movie showing how stories might differ from other perspectives. Technology will be used for research, typing stories and scripts, and recording presentations.

Description of Activities with Technology and Materials

Activity Design:

Students will be assigned to groups in which

each group will create a short story that must be

told from a certain point of view. Once the short

stories have been written, each group will act out
their story so the class can experience the story
from the narrators point of view.
Class starter and lesson connection:

What is a narrators main role in a story?

How does the way that the narrator or speaker
tells the story affect the way that you read it?

Teacher and student activities:

Class will begin with the teacher asking students

about how stories are told. Once the students
have mentioned a narrator as a factor of story
telling, the teacher will ask the students about the
different points of view that narrators tell stories
from. The students will be given the opportunity
to go to the Smart Board to write down the
different points of view that stories are told from.
The teacher will then give the students a
worksheet that contains three short stories and a
few questions about these short stories. The
students will have 30 minutes to complete this
assignment. Once all of the worksheets have
been collected, the teacher will put students in
groups of 4 or 5. Each group will be assigned to
write a short story. The groups will be given a
point of view in which they must write the story
from. The students will be asked to act this story
out. After each groups presentation of their story,
the class will be asked how would the story be
different had it been told from another point of
view. Each presentation will be filmed and put
together as a class movie.

Technology Connection:

Students will be monitored as they use the

computers and iPads to research different short
stories told from the point of view that they were
assigned. They will also use the computers and
iPads to type their short stories and scripts for
their presentations.
