PROBLEM: Check Fatigue Stress at Diaphragm Connection Plate Which Is Welded To The

This document provides a fatigue check for a composite steel stringer bridge. It gives the details of the bridge and stringer and outlines the 4 step process to check fatigue stress at the diaphragm connection plate: 1) compute the effective flange width, 2) compute the composite section moment of inertia, 3) compute the stress range due to fatigue load, 4) calculate the allowable fatigue stress. The calculated fatigue stress of 5.69 ksi is less than the allowable fatigue stress of 6.0 ksi, indicating the connection plate satisfies the fatigue requirement.

PROBLEM: Check fatigue stress at diaphragm connection plate which is welded to the
tension flange. It is an interior stringer with the typical cross section shown
below.

GIVEN :
A two lane - bridge (one in each direction)
Stringer spacing = 9.0 ft
Effective span length = 42 ft (connection is near midspan)
Stringer : W36x160. A709, Grade 50W steel
Deck thickness 8.5 in (excluding in wearing surface)
Average haunch depth of 2 in
Concrete strength = 4.5 ksi
Maximum bending moment at connection plate (fatigue load
combination) = 380 kip-ft
Minimum bending moment at connection plate (fatigue load
combination) = -25 kip-ft
Bridge single-lane average ADTT = 1800 (over 75 year design life)

STEEL STRINGER BRIDGE

DET

Compute the effective flange width.

The effective flange width is defined as:

Minimum of
x span length = (0.25)(42.00)

= 15.00 ft

Center-to-center between stringers

= 9.00 ft

12 x min. slab thickness + flange width

= [(12)(8.5)+(0.5)(12.0))]/12

= 8.84 ft
bef = 8.84 ft
