Native Americans: Powhatan, Pueblo, Lakota

SOL 2.2 The student will compare the lives and contributions of three
American Indian cultures of the past and present, with emphasis on the
Powhatan of the Eastern Woodlands, the Lakota of the Plains, and the
Pueblo peoples of the Southwest.

**All of the sheets that students will be using will be organized into a
packet that they will use for the entire unit. The teacher will collect the
packet every day so as to prevent students from losing it. As the
teacher collects the packets each day, she will look through to make
sure that students are filling in all of the parts and understanding the
content.
Powhatan (11/10-11/12)
Monday: Students will take charge of their own learning by going on a
exploration in the classroom. The teacher will provide them with books
and pictures on the Powhatan Indian. Students will be guided with a fill
in sheet to view the information that they need to get from the
exploration. They will have choice in where they find all of the
information that they retrieve.

Before students watch a video, the teacher will separate them into four
groups. They will be informed that this group is going to become an
expert on one part of the Powhatan tribe. They will be given one focus,
either food/clothing, jobs, transportation, or houses/things they built.
As the expert group watches the video, they will focus in on their topic.
Students will first view this 8 minute video to have a different
interaction with the content. They can see a reinactment of the
Powhatan lifestyle.
Once students have have finished the video, they will come back
together as a group and discuss their focus topic. After groups stop
conversation, they will come to the front of the room and share the
information with their peers.

Wednesday: Students will complete the interactive foldable in their


packet with the teacher to wrap up the information on the Powhatan
Indians in a way that students have tangibly.
Pueblo (11/13-11/17/)
Thursday- Content Exploration (refer to the first day of Powhatan)
Follow along sheet in packet
Friday- Students will watch the BrainPopJr video on Pueblo Indians
They will then work together to create their own pueblo houses by
drawing them on paper. They will also use the information from the
video and their exploration to come up with one fact that they wish to
share about the Pueblo Indians. It would be good to have students
write down their fact on a piece of paper first before writing it on their
picture so that everything is spelled correctly. Once the students
complete their picture and fact sentence. The teacher will compile
them all onto bucher paper that has been titled Our Pueblo.
Monday- Students will complete the culminating foldable with the
teacher
Lakota (11/18-11/20)
Tuesday- Content Exploration
Wednesday- Students will view a short video on the Plains Indians

After the video has finished, students will participate in a STEM


Challenge. The design brief will be included in their packet. The
challenge will be for students to design a 2-D figure that resembles a
Plains Indian. They will have access to a variety of materials that they
can use. They will also have the challenge of making their figure stand
on its own.
Thursday- Students will complete the culminating foldable with the
teacher
Friday (11/21)- Students will complete the Interactive review notes that
will be included in their packet on all of the Indian tribes. This will be
the main thing that students use to study for their assessment. The
teacher will also use some of the main vocabulary on this day that
students need to know in terms of the SOL. The teacher will also put a
focus on comparing the three tribes to one another.
Monday (11/24)- Students will participate in another STEM activitiy that
has them building one of the three houses of the three tribes discussed

in their unit. They will have limited resources to work with. The design
brief will be included in their packet.
Tuesday (11/25)- Students will take an assessment on the three Native
American Tribes
