Native American Lesson Plans
SOL 2.2 The student will compare the lives and contributions of three
American Indian cultures of the past and present, with emphasis on the
Powhatan of the Eastern Woodlands, the Lakota of the Plains, and the
Pueblo peoples of the Southwest.

**All of the sheets that students will be using will be organized into a
packet that they will use for the entire unit. The teacher will collect the
packet every day so as to prevent students from losing it. As the
teacher collects the packets each day, she will look through to make
sure that students are filling in all of the parts and understanding the
content.
Powhatan (11/10-11/12)
Monday: Students will take charge of their own learning by going on a
exploration in the classroom. The teacher will provide them with books
and pictures on the Powhatan Indian. Students will be guided with a fill
in sheet to view the information that they need to get from the
exploration. They will have choice in where they find all of the
information that they retrieve.

Before students watch a video, the teacher will separate them into four
groups. They will be informed that this group is going to become an
expert on one part of the Powhatan tribe. They will be given one focus,
either food/clothing, jobs, transportation, or houses/things they built.
As the expert group watches the video, they will focus in on their topic.
Students will first view this 8 minute video to have a different
interaction with the content. They can see a reinactment of the
Powhatan lifestyle.
Once students have have finished the video, they will come back
together as a group and discuss their focus topic. After groups stop
conversation, they will come to the front of the room and share the
information with their peers.
