This public lecture will discuss the legal and policy issues surrounding Japanese whaling in the Southern Ocean. Three speakers will address different aspects of the topic. Dr. Baird will discuss the legal and political framework governing the Southern Ocean. Dr. White will examine safety at sea regulations and the facts of a recent collision. ASPECTS OF WHALING IN THE SOUTHERN OCEAN

The speakers will canvass the issues raised by Japanese whaling in the
Southern Ocean and the recent collision involving the Ady Gil and the
Japanese whaling vessel. Dr Baird will address the legal and political
aspects of the Southern Ocean regime. Dr White will address safety at
sea, the international collision regulations and the facts surrounding this
collision. Associate Professor Heazle will discuss the counterproductive
nature of the deadlock within the International Whaling Commission as
well as possible scenarios should States continue to pursue hard line
approaches to the issue of whaling.
