Sheet 1

This document contains a revision sheet for a Thermodynamics 2 course with 5 problems involving air-standard cycles. Problem 1 describes a basic 4-process air-standard cycle and asks to sketch it on P-V and T-S diagrams, calculate maximum temperature, and calculate thermal efficiency. Problem 2 describes a 3-process cycle with variable specific heats and asks to sketch it, calculate net work, and calculate thermal efficiency. Problem 3 asks about a Carnot cycle with given temperature limits and pressure limits. Problems 4 and 5 describe additional cycles and ask to calculate various thermodynamic properties.

1) An air-standard cycle is executed in a closed system and is composed of four
processes:
1-2 Isentropic compression from 1 bar and 300 K to 1 Mpa
2-3 Constant pressure heat addition in amount of 2800kJ/kg
3-4 Constant volume heat rejection to 1 bar
4-1 Constant pressure heat rejection to initial state
a) Sketch the cycle on P-v and T-s diagrams (Property diagrams).
b) Calculate the maximum temperature in the cycle.
c) Calculate the thermal efficiency.
2) An air-standard cycle with variable specific heats is executed in a closed system
with 0.003 kg of air and consists of these three processes:
1-2 Constant volume heat addition from 95 kPa and 290 K to 380 kPa
2-3 Isentropic expansion to 95 kPa
3-1 Constant pressure heat rejection to initial state
a) Sketch the cycle on P-v and T-s diagrams (Property diagrams).
b) Calculate the net work per cycle.
c) Calculate the thermal efficiency.
3) A Carnot cycle is executed in a closed system with 0.003 kg of air, the temperature
limits are 300 K and 900 K, and the minimum and maximum pressures are 20 kPa
and 2 MPa, determine the net work per cycle assuming constant specific heats.
4) A Carnot cycle uses air, receives heat from a heat reservoir at 1027C, is repeated
1500 times per minute and has a compression ratio of 12.The compression ratio is
defined as the volume ratio during the compression process.
a) Determine the maximum temperature of the low temperature heat reservoir.
b) The cycle thermal efficiency.
c) The amount of heat that must be supplied per cycle if the device is to
produce 500 kW of power.

5) An air-standard cycle with variable coefficients is executed in a closed system and

is composed of the following four processes:
1-2
2-3
3-4
4-1

v = constant heat addition from 100 kPa and 27 oC to 300 kPa

p = constant heat addition to 1027 oC
Isentropic expansion to 100 kPa
p = constant heat rejection to initial state
a) Show the cycle on P-v and T-s diagrams.
b) Calculate the net work output per unit mass.
c) Determine the thermal efficiency.

Repeat solution using constant specific heats at room temperature.
