Part I: Instructions for the Game Website Review (30 points)
Choose any 3 of the websites provided, or locate Dewey websites on your own, and complete a review of each. You may use the following chart, or
you may present this information in any format you choose. Include the title of the website, the url, a brief sentence explanation of what is offered at
the site, a full review of features and quality of the site, and how you would use this site for instruction in your classroom.

Website # 1
Quia- Dewey Decimal System
http://www.quia.com/mc/7265.html
A matching game to match topics with call numbers
The site gives students a list of terms to study and the choice of playing a matching, concentration or studying
flash cards. Students match the call numbers to their general classifications. There are not a lot of graphics
on this page, they are just matching terms to Dewey Decimal numbers.
I would use this site as a review of learning about the various classifications. I would use matching with
younger grades and concentration with older grades.
Website # 2
Dewey World WebQuest
http://www.hartville.k12.mo.us/hr2slibrary/wqdhome.html
A complete webquest that takes students through the design of an amusement park based on the Dewey
Decimal Classifications.
This webquest includes an appropriate introduction to the Dewey Decimal System and the task students are
expected complete. The task section includes detailed directions of what students are expected to do. The
process tab gives students links to information about the Dewey Decimal System. Students should have
familiarity with the topic before beginning a webquest, so these sites should be more for review purposes.
The evaluation tab provides a rubric for how students will be assessed on their work. The conclusion tab
offers more online games students can play to work on Dewey Decimal System. The teacher resources

provide teachers with the standards that were used for the basis of this project. The credits credit where the
information and graphics on the site came from.
This entire webquest could be used as a culminating activity, or the process tab can be used as introductory
pieces to various lessons on the Dewey Decimal System. I would review the process tabs, but then use the
webquest as project to be completed at the end of a unit on the Dewey Decimal System.

Education World
http://www.educationworld.com/a_lesson/02/lp261-02.shtml
This site provides a complete lesson plan from beginning to end, about the Dewey Decimal System.
This lesson plan gives detailed instructions and supplemental materials for an upper elementary lesson about
the Dewey Decimal systems. They provide links to helpful websites that students can use to complete the
task. Students are asked to order and decide the appropriate call numbers for a set of books.
I would use teach this lesson in its entirety. I would probably make some modifications to the task. Since it
would probably be an introductory lesson, Id stick with finding just the basic classification in the 00s, rather
than going into the tens place. Id also give them actual book jackets or pictures of book covers to order and
make it a cut and paste activity. Perhaps Id use actual books and once theyve been ordered, have students
actually shelve them.
Part II: Instructions for the Dewey Training Aid (50 points)
POST to Discussion Board
Think of a clever way to introduce/reinforce the Dewey Classification System to students. Develop an age-appropriate tool for introducing Deweys
10 main classes to students. For example, this could be in the form of a handout, flyer, vimeo, youtube, poster, screen saver, sliderocket, voki,
comiclife, actual realia or photos for shelf identification, etc. Be creative!! This will be used as your tool for introducing students to Dewey
Classification for the DDC Game and Lesson Activity. This lesson should be conducted in the school library media center so you can show students
how the system is arranged by topic in their SLMC after your instruction.
You must also respond to at least three (3) of your classmates postings at the discussion board, giving constructive comments about their Training
Aid submission. Keep in mind you will be using this aid as a Dewey lesson activity with students.
I created posters to be posted over shelves, illustrating each classification.

Part III: Instructions for the Dewey Game Lesson Activity with Pre/Post Test (60 points)
Determine a grade level (large group with a sub-group) and indicate a GCCC standard for your activity it can be related to a content area such as
science, geography, etc. It is best if taught within a context area. Administer a pre/post test for your Dewey games activity to the large group.
Complete the games activity with the group. Administer the pre/post test after the activity. Analyze your large group and subgroup data indicating
how scores on the test changed after your instruction. Use charts or graphs as well as narrative to report your findings. Write a reflection on how the
lesson went and what you would change to improve your instruction. You might want to use the following outline example:

Huey and Louie Meet Dewey
One week prior to the lesson, I gave students the Dewey Quiz as a pre-test.
Opening:
Students have already reviewed the Dewey Decimal System this year in the media center. We did a quick review of
what the Dewey Decimal System is by watching the following overview of the system on youtube. (
http://youtu.be/CrTu9hwJWlg ) Students were separated into groups of 2 or 3 and given one of the training aid
posters. They had 2 minutes to brainstorm what type of book could be found in the classification system they were
given and shared that with the class.
Work Period:
The work period was adapted from the Education World websites Huey and Louie Meet Dewey lesson at
http://www.educationworld.com/a_lesson/02/lp261-02.shtml. I read the story about how Huey and Louie mixed up
books, and students were given the task of classifying the books in the proper category. I changed the titles so that
they included books from all classification systems. Students worked with their partners to complete the task.
Closing:
In closing, we reviewed where each title should be classified. Students then completed the Dewey Quiz as a post-
test.

AVERAGE SCORES FOR CLASS 4B
25 total students
AVERAGE SCORES FOR CLASS 4B SPECIAL EDUCATION POPULUATION
5 total students
This particular fourth grade class is the EIP/co-taught special education classroom for fourth grade. Few students
are operating at grade level and there are several students with behavior concerns in this class. There are a total of
25 students in the class and 5 are identified as special education students. Fourteen of these students see the EIP
Reading Teacher throughout the week.
The class average on the pre-test was 30% and the post-test average was 60%. Although they did not show
mastery, that is a 30 point gain in their understanding of the subject matter.
Reflection on your instruction
strengths / weaknesses /
changes recommended
The lesson went well, especially considering the behavior issues associated with this class. Students were engaged
in the activity and genuinely interested in completing the task. They put in great effort to improve their test score
from the previous week.
There were no accommodations for the special education students. They were grouped heterogeneously among
their peers. That arrangement worked out well. The special education co-teacher and I did a good job of ensuring
that all students participated and contributed to the discussions.
I think wed have had more passing scores on the post-test if it had been given at the beginning and end of a unit,
rather than one lesson. Students need more practice with the Dewey Decimal System and had only a general
understanding of what it was and how it works.
In future lessons, I may want to use actual books from the media center. Id have students classify them, but then
actually reshelf them in their proper place.
