Lesson Plan: Year Level: Students' Prior Knowledge

The lesson plan is for a Year 3 science class about the lifecycle of caterpillars. Students will watch a video of "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" and discuss what caterpillars eat. They will then use iPads and a QR scanning app to find pictures and information about caterpillars posted around the classroom. Students will add this to a mind map using the Popplet app. The lesson aims to teach students about the external features and lifecycle of caterpillars from egg to butterfly. The teacher will assess if students met the objectives by checking their collaborative work and mind maps.

with the higher performing students.

Students are now asked to stand up and search for

the QR codes to scan.

Children are reminded to walk and not run, and to

use their inside voices.

Open the QR app on one of the iPads.

Click the Popplet app where you will make a mind

map of all the information you gathered. You can
look at the example below to give your ideas on
what to write and how to set it up.

You will notice that there are pictures and

descriptions of the physical appearance of a

caterpillar located around the classroom.

Using the QR app to take photos of the QR codes
that are displayed around the room.

Add descriptions, key words and pictures to the mind

map as you go.

and the QR

app to find out information and pictures

about caterpillars?"

Gather students on the map and ask What did we

learn from this lesson?
Students raise their hands to answer, choose 4
students to answer, ensure the students at
educational risk have an opportunity to answer.
I liked learning all about the life cycle of a
caterpillar and how they turn into beautiful
butterflies.
Next lesson, we are going to learn about our own
lifecycle.
We start off as a tiny little speckle inside our
mummys tummy and then we grow up into
Grandmas and Grandpas!
Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next
lesson?)

It is almost time for recess
