The topic is a critical issue in my world because
Many schools do not have quality new teacher induction programs and those that have established
systems are often not utilizing them for maximum benefit to the district and the new teacher. With
outrageous teacher turnover rates in many schools, the intentional actions of improving retention
through development of ideas such as more intensive induction procedures and the creation of
professional learning communities to provide support for new educators must be a priority.
Educators can impact the situation in this way
Educators can provide suggestions for the topics to be covered during discussions of induction
programs as well as volunteer to become mentors. If not directly involved with mentoring a new
teacher, veteran teachers can periodically provide support, check-in, and classroom modeling for the
new staff. Veteran teachers can help create and facilitate PLCs for the new teachers as well.
