Title: Whats my value?

Course/Grade Level: Math/ 3rd grade


SOL: 3.1a & 3.1b
Purpose:
The purpose of this lesson is to further the students understanding in the value of a number
depending on the place it is in. The students have been practicing identifying place values of a
number up to the hundred thousand. They also have been practicing writing numbers in standard,
written and expanded form. This lesson will allow students to understand more in depth of a
numbers place value, not only by the word, but its value. For example: 86,492; the 6 in the
thousand place and its value on its own is 6,000 not 6.
Learning Objectives:
1. Students will practice writing out how many tens are in a number.
2. Students will identify the value of a digit.
Materials/Resources:
Base ten block notebook worksheet (Green/Blue)
Dry Erase Markers
Tissue
Prior Teaching Preparation:
Print out materials
Warm-up/ Introduction:
Individual Work
Do a review on How many tens block are in a number
Students will be given a worksheet that has base ten blocks and they are to cut and glue it
into their notebooks.
Do the green and blue worksheets
With a red pen they are to write how many tens block are in each number.
Procedure:
After introduce them to the value of a number
Go over the place values ones, tens, hundreds, thousand, ten thousand, hundred thousand
Explain a value of a number starting from ten..hundred thousand
Do different examples where they can say it orally
If there is enough time give different numbers and have students write the value on their
desk with dry erase markers
Assignment/Homework:
None
Assessment:
I will walk around observing the students while they are doing individual work to see who
understands how many tens block are in a number. During the value portion, I will base students
understanding through their answers.
