Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 6. Becoming A Professional.
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs identify and conduct themselves as members of
the early childhood profession. They know and use ethical guidelines and other professional standards
related to early childhood practice. They are continuous, collaborative learners who demonstrate
knowledgeable, reflective and critical perspectives on their work, making informed decisions that integrate
knowledge from a variety of sources. They are informed advocates for sound educational practices and
policies. (NAEYC, 2010)

Brief Description of Evidence:

Throughout my educational journey I have earned my Technical Certificate through IVY Tech Community
College, became a NAEYC member, and attended the IAEYC conference annually. I am also certified in CPR,
First Aid and Oxygen as well as Child Sexual Abuse Prevention.

Analysis of What I Learned:

During my years of going to school I have learned a lot about child development. It has helped me be a
better teacher and know whats developmentally appropriate for my children. Attending the IAEYC
conference annually has allowed me a chance to gain knowledge from different professionals within my
field. I gathered and learned information about kindergarten readiness as well as visiting with people like
Lisa Murphy, getting some unique, different and new ideas to use within the classroom. Being certified in
CPR, First Aide and supplemental oxygen I am now able to help my students if they are choking or in need
of more assistance. The Child Sexual Abuse Prevention I have been trained to recognize the signs and
indicators of possible abuse regarding my students.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC

Standard:
Through this project I am now confident in my ability to plan, observe and educate my preschoolers with
my knowledge from my child development classes. In the facility where I teach, we have four core values
which are respect, responsibility, honesty and caring that we follow each day. I know what is
developmentally appropriate for my children and how to observe them to gain more knowledge of their
learning. While filling out and reviewing each childs progress report, I reevaluate myself as a teacher, our
curriculum and teaching techniques. As a NAEYC member I feel more involved and am able to attend more
conferences, such as the IAEYC conference in Indianapolis. I have now attended this conference for six
years, gaining more information on how to help me be a better teacher and to make my classroom a more
exciting place for the children to learn each year. I stay in contact with local schools, other professionals
such as teachers and school officials and government agencies. In working with young children I have to
be CPR, First Aid certified as well as trained in Child Sexual Abuse Prevention. This make me be more
aware of what is going on with my children and if they have any special accommodations.
