Lesson Objectives:
By the end of this lesson students will be able to:
-

Represent places and features on a pictorial map


Verbalise where different buildings are on their pictorial map

Students Prior Knowledge:


- Students have previously walked around the school locating different buildings
- Students have learnt different geographical terminology (under, over, around, through, between)
- Students have previously done one on ones with either the teacher or Student Officer

LESSON STRUCTURE:
Time

Introduction & Motivation:

Time

Gain students attention clapping sequence.


Invite students to sit down in front of the interactive
whiteboard.
Ask students if they remember walking around the
school and looking at important features of the
school. Ask students what they saw?
After students have shared their answers, teacher
shares a picture of a map of the school. Discuss
with students the building they see, and how and
where it is positioned on the map. Remind students
of the prepositional language students learned in the
previous lesson. Sing the Prepositional Song to
remind students of prepositions.

Main Content:

Discuss with students what they see when looking at


the map.
Explain to students that in this lesson we will be
creating a pictorial map of the school using recycled
material.
Show students some of the recycled material that you
have. Ask students how they might use it to create a
map.
As a class create a map of the classroom using the
recycled materials for students to visualise what is
expected of them. Ask students one by one to come and
add things to the map.
Discuss the map with students, and ask students why
they put things in particular places.
Remind students of the importance of putting things in
the right position.
Upon completion, explain to students that this is what
they will be doing individually. Tell students to do their
best work, because you will be taking pictures of them
for their Star Books (Portfolios).
Ask students if they have any questions to clarify what
you have said.
Send students back to their desks.
Students are to work individually for twenty minutes to

should be conceded:
